The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies, and it must not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. It has also been associated with pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and kidney injury from severe dehydration, and taking it with insulin or a sulfonylurea increases the risk of low blood sugar. Do not use semaglutide during pregnancy or while trying to become pregnant. Seek emergency care for severe, persistent abdominal pain, with or without vomiting, which can be a sign of pancreatitis, and contact your provider promptly about a lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.
